You will take a look at how plants shape this forest and the creatures that call it home. \nGardeners: Ask Us!\nSept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 pm.\nRoots and Shoots Garden\nMaster Gardeners will be at the garden to answer your questions! \nTree Climbing Demonstration\nSept. 10 at 10 a.m.\nWest Lawn\nHave you ever been curious about how to professionally climb trees? Then this event is for you! Mike Yost\, ISA certified arborist and certified tree worker of the University of Guelph\, will demonstrate two types of tree-climbing techniques\, single/stationary rope technique and doubled/moving rope technique. Mike will also answer any questions about tree climbing/tree care\, talk about some of the physics of tree climbing\, and address proper body positioning of tree climbing. \nBlast From the Past Hike\nSept. 10 from 11 a.m. to noon\nWest Lawn\nMarika Bowrin will lead you in exploring the wonderful World of Trees collection while learning about some species that have been around for millions of years and are still standing. Home to over 400 species of trees and shrubs\, the Arboretum boasts a broad collection of rare\, endangered\, native\, and non-native tree species and some living fossils. \nEcopyschology Walking Workshop\nSept. 10 from 11 a.m. to noon\nWest Lawn\nMemona Hossain will lead this interactive\, hands-on session and will provide an intro to the concept of Ecopsychology. This will be followed by an activity that will engage participants to look at how we can rely on nature through a reciprocation of experiences\, allowing nature to gently guide our awareness through our senses\, and gain understanding through nature’s wisdom. \nBeings of Victoria Woods Tour\nSept. 10 from 11 a.m. to noon\nWest Lawn\nJoin this public walk led by Chirsta Wise through Victoria Woods\, one of the Arboretum’s old growth forests. You will be taking a deeper look at the plants\, animals and fungi within Victoria Woods. So make sure you put on your detective cap at the start of this hike! \nGuelph Urban Forest Friends (GUFF): Henry Kock Award for Tree Stewardship\nSept. 10 from noon to 1 p.m.\nWest Lawn\, Arboretum Gazebo\nThis year\, the Arboretum Expo will feature the Guelph Urban Forest Friends (GUFF): Henry Kock Award for Tree Stewardship presentation. \nPanel and Launch of Sound Walk- “How to Draw a Tree (Trees\, Mental Health\, Creativity)”\nSept. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m.\nArboretum Centre\nThis panel will be led by Dawn Matheson whose participatory art project brings individuals living with mental illnesses together with trees for a yearlong creative\, care-taking\, reciprocal engagement culminating in an immersive public sound walk. The work aims to reflect the parallel crisis of mental illness and the environmental crisis by expanding ideas around art and new media\, art practice as care\, and the interdependency between humans and our natural environment. This panel will present the site-specific sound walk on the grounds of the Arboretum\, plus the accessible web-based version created by artist Richelle Forsey. The team will also introduce the second phase of the project\, incorporating students in the How to Draw a Forest project. This event will be followed by a reciprocal tree planting on Johnston Green with Student Wellness.

DESCRIPTION:Students from the University of Guelph’s History Department (College of Arts) are collecting memories about local history in the Arboretum at Guelph – and you can help by telling your story! \nExperiential Learning Students of HIST 3650 invite local community members to share stories for inclusion in an online digital archive and audio walking tour. Participants will be invited to the Arboretum to partake in a 30–45-minute interview. \nThe goal of the research project is to create an online resource of oral\, local history to create an audio walking tour for visitors to the Arboretum\, and to prepare history students for work in the public sphere. These students will be busy researching specific areas of the Arboretum and are eager to hear your personal stories throughout its 50-year history. DESCRIPTION:Mask\, proof of vaccination and screening required to attend this event. \nPonds teem with a diversity of prey and predators that conduct their lives largely unseen below the surface. The online portion of this workshop will introduce you to some of these fascinating animals. \nThe importance of vernal pools will be highlighted. These temporary ponds are crucial to the reproductive success of various creatures including wood frogs\, fairy shrimp and spotted salamanders. \nThe outdoor workshop will begin with an examination of several species of pond organisms that Don Scallen will have on hand. We’ll then visit one of the Arboretum ponds to see what else we can discover. Dip nets and containers to briefly house the creatures will be supplied. \nFee: $55 (plus HST) per person\, per session if booked prior to the early bird deadline of April 15\, 2022. Walking through this program\, participants gradually gain a deeper sense of self-value\, one’s relationship with nature\, and a desire to engage with Nature as a trusted and valued aspect of one’s own life. \nThe Ecopsychological focus here will be to open yourself to direct experiences within nature and rely on a reciprocation of experiences where you will allow Nature to gently guide your awareness through your senses. You will be challenged to learn from Nature’s wisdom in the absence of words and languages and simply rely on your non-language based senses. You will be amazed by how and what Nature reveals to you through such an approach. DESCRIPTION:Explore the mysterious\, weird and wonderful world of fungi! The course is open to students of any skill level\, with the assumption that most will be beginners. Past courses have been taught in October\, when mushrooms are most abundant. However\, this year the course will focus on the seasonal changes in mushroom diversity. The course will be divided into five Saturday morning forays about a month apart on the following dates: \n\nJuly 13\nAugust 10\nSeptember 21\nOctober 19\nNovember 9\n\nParticipants may sign up for one\, more or all forays. However\, if you want to take more than one\, it is recommended to spread them out in order to see the greatest diversity. The morning foray will be followed by an identification session. A species list will be compiled for each foray and a combined foray list will be sent to all interested participants. Please bring a collecting basket of some sort. DESCRIPTION:This program will help you refine your skills at identifying trees in Ontario. The focus will be on learning important identification characteristics. Difficult groups such as the cherry\, oak and walnut families as well as the easier groups such as ash and maple will be explored. The afternoon will be spent outside\, identifying trees in the forest as well as young cultivated trees with their Eurasian counterparts in the Arboretum’s World of Trees collection. SUMMARY:Arboretum: The Sky Tonight...Featuring Hercules
DESCRIPTION:Join guest instructor Trevor Chandler inside his portable planetarium for this amazing program. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend! This planetarium series highlights the night sky as it is appears that evening. The presentations will change from month to month and season to season as our planet “goes through the motions”. We’ll look at what constellations and objects are visible at a given time of year\, but we’ll also spend some time getting to know a selected region of the sky in greater detail. At least one constellation will be selected each month\, highlighting its mythology and brighter stars including their names\, lore and meaning. Then we’ll take a look at a few of the astronomical objects located within the boundaries of the featured constellation. If weather conditions permit\, participants may be invited outside under the stars to see the real deal through a telescope. \nOur featured Constellation for July is Hercules\, the champion. Hercules is prominently positioned in the mid-summer sky. This region of the sky also happens to be the direction toward which our solar system is heading as makes its long circuit around the center of the Milky Way\, once every 250 million years or so. Although it is the fifth largest of the 88 constellations\, Hercules does not contain many bright stars. It does\, however\, abound with objects that are visible even with a small telescope. Perhaps its most beautiful feature is the Great Hercules Star Cluster\, a swarm of about one million bluish suns. \nGuest Instructor: Trevor Chandler \nRegistration \nRegistration Fee: $15 per person PLUS a $10 fee per transaction (you can register multiple people per transaction and multiple Planetarium programs per transaction). \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by July 8\, the program may be cancelled. SUMMARY:Arboretum: Mushrooms Through Summer and Fall Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore the mysterious\, weird and wonderful world of fungi! The course is open to students of any skill level\, with the assumption that most will be beginners. Past courses have been taught in October\, when mushrooms are most abundant. However\, this year the course will focus on the seasonal changes in mushroom diversity. The course will be divided into five Saturday morning forays about a month apart on the following dates: \n\nJuly 13\nAugust 10\nSeptember 21\nOctober 19\nNovember 9\n\nParticipants may sign up for one\, more or all forays. However\, if you want to take more than one\, it is recommended to spread them out in order to see the greatest diversity. The morning foray will be followed by an identification session. A species list will be compiled for each foray and a combined foray list will be sent to all interested participants. Please bring a collecting basket of some sort. You are encouraged to bring a field guide\, such as George Barron’s field guide\, Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada as well as a digital camera and jump drive for sharing photos. \nGuest Instructor: Tim Myles. \nRegistration \nEarly Bird Fee: $50 PLUS a $10 fee per transaction by July 5 (Note: You can register for multiple workshops and/or multiple people in one transaction so you only pay the $10 once). \nRegular Fee: $60 plus transaction fee. \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by the early bird deadline the course may be cancelled.
